Whether you have 100 pounds to lose or five, you will soon have experienced and proven medical assistance in Monroe.
Dr. Ross Fox, who has been treating obesity successfully for 46 years, is opening a branch of his successful Auburn weight-loss practice, called Foxkins Diamond Program for Weight Management, in Monroe Monday, July 18.
If you are trying to lose weight, the diamond program is your best friend, said Dr. Fox.
"The diamond does not refer to a gemstone; it refers to a baseball diamond with four bases," he said.
Each base represents a cornerstone of his practice. Home plate is acknowledgement that obesity is very difficult to treat.
"For all practical purposes it is an incurable disease," said Fox. "People can lose the weight but if they aren't careful it can creep back on."
First base is using medication that controls hunger, and more importantly, says Dr. Fox, craving for carbohydrates. Fox uses Phentermine for his clients, a medication that once formed half of the powerhouse diet regime of "Phen-Fen." The other half the drug combination, Fenfluramine, was deemed unsafe and was removed from the market, but Phentermine is FDA-approved and considered safe.
"It really works, it turns off the hunger," said Fox.
Second base is a low-carb diet Dr. Fox calls the Foxkins Diet, which is essentially the Atkins diet, a high-protein, low-carb regimen.
"We have to coach people to avoid carbohydrates or they won't lose any weight," he said. "What I say to folks, is, if it moves, you can eat it. If it doesn't move, avoid it. Most people tolerate a high protein diet well, and they lose a bunch of weight. We can get eight to 10 pounds a month off most people."
Third base is exercise.
"We don't care what they do as long as it's cardio, for 20 minutes a day," said Dr. Fox. "A cardio exercise is something that makes you short of breath."
Reaching goal weight is a home run, and most clients get there, said Dr. Fox.
"It's uncommon that they don't," he said.
Dr. Fox has success with men and women, and with people trying to shed 100 pounds or trying to lose 20.
"The parameters are broad," he said. "If people feel they are overweight they are usually candidates for our program."
In his 46 years of practice, Dr. Fox has shifted his focus from surgical treatment of obesity to medical treatment, he said.
"When I was a surgeon I thought surgery was the best way," he said. "But in all honesty I can get as much weight off a person non-surgically as I ever could surgically."
Obesity is the leading cause of preventable death in America, which is why many insurance companies now pay for its treatment; about half of Fox's clients are able to get reimbursed by their insurance.
Dr. Fox is also well-respected in his field; he has published about 25 papers on the treatment of obesity in medical journals. He is also a pioneer in the industry; he helped the Swedish developer of the Adjustable Gastric Band, called the "LapBand," to become FDA-approved.
Weight loss is difficult, but Fox's years of experience have taught him the best strategies to accomplish it, he said.
"We've been doing this for 46 years," he said. "We have long experience in weight loss, doing the things that are documented to be successful in the research around the country."
